SOS Founder, Jim Christopher, CAS, DAPA, opened the 2002 SOS International Conference and also introduced co-host Ed Batis, CAS. Ed Batis, CAS, co-hosted the conference and also presented an overview of his anger management sessions. Dr. Randolph Atkins, a research scientist with the Walsh Group, a private substance abuse research and consulting firm, spoke on his proposed research project, a comparative survey of SOS and AA recovery group participants.

 
Barry Solof, M.D., Physician in-charge of Addiction Medicine for Southern California Permanente Medical Group, delivered a compelling talk on "Medical Aspects of Chemical Dependency." Longtime WNY SOS Convenor and activist, Jack, shared his early SOS Experiences. Longtime SOS Convenor, Larry Beck, creator of "Your Sobriety Toolkit," popular SOS seminar and brochure, gave an inspiring talk and also took the conference photos.

 
Popular SOS author, Liz Purcell (Seeds of Sobriety: Daily Secular Reflections) gave a moving talk and signed copies of her new book. Dr. Vern L. Bullough, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, SUNY Visiting Professor of Nursing, USC, and SOS Advisory Board Member, addressed the SOS Conference. Joseph Hunter, CAS, substance abuse counselor at Lost Angeles County’s Warm Springs Rehab Center, spoke of the success of SOS meetings held there, fulfilling the need for options in recovery.

SOS has a strong presence in Texas Jails & Prisons 

Bob Lewis, Substance Abuse Director for the Volunteer and Education Section, Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice., reported on the success of SOS meetings in the Texas system. Guy Ogan, Substance Abuse Program II, Program and Development Specialist for the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice, shared his thoughts regarding the over 150 SOS meetings in TDCJ. Duaine Metevia, longtime SOS Convenor (SOS Dallas), SOS prison outreach program activist (creator of "SOS Behind Bars" Web site) and SOS webmaster for SOS International sites (sossobriety.org and secular sobriety.org).

 
SOS London Convenor, Malcolm Rees, presented an update on SOS in the U.K. Alcoholism Center for Women and Van Ness Recovery House founder, Morris Kight, addressed the conference. An exuberant Ruth Hollman, founder of SHARE!, presented an overview of her organization.

 

Dr. Louis Markert presented an overview of his popular series of six SOS seminars.

 

Bernie DeKoven, author of The Well-Played Game and founder of "DeepFUN," literally brought the conference audience to its feet during his hilarious presentation. Jubilant Women for Sobriety speaker, Nancy, sent greetings to SOS from the members of her international support group organization.

 
Recovery, Inc., leader, Bob Dey, along with other Recovery, Inc., members, demonstrated a typical meeting process for the SOS Conference. Dr. Randolph Atkins addressed a packed house at the Center for Inquiry–West; over eighty participants attended the SOS Conference.

 
 
"El Magnifico," famed eleven-year-old magician performed for Conference registrants immediately following the Conference presentations, Saturday, August 3, 2002.   Popular stand-up comedian Maura Kennedy (www.funnyblonde.tv) entertained SOS Conference registrants Friday night, August 2, at CFI–West.
